Who lives and who dies?
In July we discussed a great summer panel from virtual San Diego Comic-Con discussing the final ten episodes of History Channel’s Vikings series, following the first ten episodes released a year ago (check out our coverage of the panel here at borg if you missed it). The showrunner and cast of History’s Vikings, including showrunner and writer Michael Hirst and actors Travis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick, and Clive Standen, who we saw at their first Comic-Con back in 2013, provided a brief preview of the final 10 of the season’s 20 episodes. Now those final episodes will hop networks to Amazon Prime, where they will all be available for binge-watching on December 30, followed later on their original network, History. Along with the news of the change in networks and streaming date is a new trailer–check it out below.
For fans of the television series–our favorite historical, fantasy-infused series of the past decade–this is the end of a great ride, a television adventure like nothing else. The back half of the final season, Season 6–the final ten episodes–of Vikings provides the final fate of hundreds of incredible characters winnowed down into the last men and women standing. The Vikings seem to be overrun, and the unlikely sons of Ragnar Lothbrok–Alex Høgh Andersen’s Ivar and Marco Ilsø’s Hvitserk–are positioning themselves for a return to power. Or are they merely pawns for the final obliteration of Viking rule by foreign invaders? Hirst, who stayed close to the legends and mythology all along, could show anyone in the final scene holding the last sword.
Here is the new trailer for the end of Vikings:
But nothing really ever ends, does it? After the end of Vikings, the franchise flips once more to Netflix, where Hirst will take a back seat, and a new crew and and actors tell the story 100 years later of historical figures including Leif Erikson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir, Harald Hardrada, and William the Conqueror. Titled Vikings: Valhalla, that series does not have a fixed release date yet.
